Reading and commenting on the stories of other writers on Medium is key. The concept of following and getting a follow back in return seems to work.

I've only had one writer follow me and then un-follow. He obviously just wanted to have 100 writers following him without getting involved in the Medium community by reading and commenting on their stories.

Whenever I can, I keep in touch with those who follow me and I always follow back.
