Twelve years ago, I was friends with a very wealthy and successful Chinese-Thai businessman. His family invited me to dinner on several occasions. Although technically Thai with a Thai ID card, he and his family were regarded and acted as Chinese. The inside of the house was completely Chinese. Chinese altar, Lazy Susan on the table, and Chinese etiquette and manners.

You could see one of the Crown Princes palaces in the far distance. We could see it from his balcony but he explained he had been told not to ever open windows on that side of his house in case any domestic sounds could reach the palace.

I know sound can carry but that seemed absurd given how far away the palace was. Nevertheless, he always complied.
