I check synonyms constantly. I hate seeing the same word repeated several times in a story. I learned that lesson when in school at the age of 12. Our English master was "old school" and would not tolerate such repetition.

There are over 600.000 words in the English language. We are spoilt for choice and there is no excuse to use the same word over and over.
